As an Imam, I don't believe in God!

As a child of the 90s, I have grown up in the UK observing other Muslims authors and such use the word God in the translations of the Quran as well as the Hadith, not forgetting to mention other works of various Islamic literature presented to the Muslim Ummah throughout the more then 3 decades of my lifetime.

And to be honest, it was a precious word that meant a-lot to us. It was the word used as reference to mean our lord and creator Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'aala) whom we (hopefully) worship 5 times a day.

It was a word through which we could converse with Christians and no-Muslims alike and exclaim with glee how we and they are the same and that we have a-lot in common.

I have since quite a while, departed heavily from that narrative and position and work to disconnect that word attribution from mention of my lord and creator from the minds of the modern Muslims because this once precious word has become filthy and degraded.

Below are a few examples of why I completely disagree with using this word in my Islamic lectures and practises.

  • God of War
  • God of skateboarding
  • God of Modern Warfare
  • Fortnite God
  • Fidget Spinner God
  • God of Music
  • God of Mischief
  • Sex God/God of  Sex
  • God of the Gays / Gay God
  • Transgender God
  • God of Seduction

How can we honestly let our youth be exposed to this grotesque language and twisted attribution? Especially at a time when Netflix is constantly creating all sorts of new 'God' series that we as a nation are pumping into our own minds and the minds of our innocent children.

There will be those scholars that will debate that there is nothing wrong with using the word God for Allah because in biblical language, there is a stark difference between God with a capital 'G' and god with a lowercase 'g' as the capital 'G' God is for the lord and creator and the lowercase version is for big entities and individuals.

My response to this argument is quite a simple one.

How can you expect people who don't even know how to do Istinja (washing private areas before performing the ritual purity, otherwise know as Wudu), or read Namaz properly, to comprehend the minute difference between God with a small 'G' or a capital 'G'?

Please remember that simple small word attribution can be poison for the mind if not safeguarded against. If you recall, there have been numerous terrorist attacks that took place prior to 9/11 but non were attributed to Islam.
Post 9/11, if anyone including Muslims hear the word terrorist or terrorism, the first things that comes to mind is a bearded guys who calls himself a Mumslim.

We have to be very vigilant about what we language we associate with our Lord and Creator most High, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'aala).

May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'aala) give us Hidayah and internal power to protect out Iman.
